A group of fourteen species distributed from Corsica and Sardinia in the west to Anatolia in the east. O. elegans is endemic to Cyprus and O. aegaea to the Greek island of Karpathos. O. climacis and O. lycia, two of the rarest Ophrys, are only known to exist in very few spots close to Antalya in the south of Turkey. Both are highly endangered species.

This wonderful species grows along the Tyrrhenian coast of Italy in Toscana and in Latium. Further south, O. pollinensis takes its place. The shape of the stigmatic cavity of the two species is very different. Cette très belle espèce pousse le long de la côte occidentale de l'Italie, en Toscane et dans le Latium. This splendid species takes the place of O. crabronifera along the south Tyrrhenian coast of Italy, in Campania and Calabria. This very beautiful species is endemic to south-east Italy and Dalmatia. All these slides are made on the Gargano peninsula. As I was over there at the very beginning of the flowering of the plants, some of the labellums are not yet completely bent, hence a rather trapezial shape. Slides 9-10-11 are made in Croatia, on Lastovo Island. Cette très belle espèce est endémique du sud-est de l'Italie et de Dalmatie. Toutes ces diapositives sont faites au promontoire du Gargano. Comme j'y étais en tout début de la floraison, certains labelles ne sont pas encore complètement rabattus vers le bas et ont un aspect plus trapézoïdal que lorsque la fleur est tout à fait épanouie. This species, described from the Greek island of Icaria, was also fond on Naxos during a trip organized over there by the Section Orchidées d'Europe des Naturalistes belges in 1996. This lovely little Greek endemic is mainly distributed in Peloponnese but has also stations along the North rim of the Gulf of Corinth where it flowers in March-April. The plant is 15-50 cm tall and carries up to 11 flowers. The lip is 9-15 mm long and has a very characteristic white pilosity on its shoulders. Following Pierre Delforge, around the Gulf of Corinth the species is perhaps in the process of being absorbed by O. delphinensis (B11-6), its hybrid with a species of the O. oestrifera group. Ce joli petit endémique grec est surtout répendu dans le Péloponnèse mais existe aussi sur la rive nord du Golfe de Corinthe où il fleurit en mars-avril. La hauteur de la plante varie de 15 à 50 cm. Elle porte jusqu'à 11 fleurs. La longueur du labelle est comprise entre 9 et 15 mm; ses épaules sont couvertes d'une pilosité blanche caractéristique. D'après Pierre Delforge, autour du Golfe de Corinthe l'espèce est en train de se faire absorber par O. delphinensis (B11-6), son hybride avec une espèce du groupe d'O. oestrifera. This splendid species is endemic to the island of Karpathos, Greece, where it flowers rather early, already in March. This very elegant Ophrys is endemic to Cyprus where it grows throughout the island but is always sporadic and rather rare. Its main distribution area is in the north of the island, in the Pentadactylos Mountains, where it has perhaps suffered now from the salep industry. The plant is rather slender, being at most 20 cm tall. The flowers are middle-sized with a lip length of 9-13 mm. The lip itself is very globular, always trilobed at the top. Its shape is triangular to oblong triangular. The species cannot be confused with any other Cyprian Ophrys. Cet élégant Ophrys est endémique de Chypre où il est répandu dans toute l'île en restant souvent sporadique et assez rare. Il est plus abondant dans le nord de l'île, dans la chaîne du Pentadactylos, où ses populations ont peut-être souffert récemment de la récolte du salep. La plante qui peut atteindre 20 cm de haut, est assez grêle. Les fleurs sont de taille moyenne avec un labelle dont la longueur varie de 9 à 13 mm. Il est très globuleux, toujours trilobé au sommet, de forme triangulaire à triangulaire oblongue. À Chypre cette espèce ne peut être confondue avec aucune autre. This splendid Ophrys species was originally described from the Greek island of Rhodes, but it was later shown that it has an important distribution area all along the southwestern and southern coast of Anatolia, extending even east of Antalya to the Içel (Mersin) province. It's quite an early plant, flowering from March to the middle of April, with a trilobed lip, 11-13 mm long. Ce splendide Ophrys, à l'origine décrit de Rhodes, habite aussi tout le sud-ouest et le sud de l'Anatolie, s'avançant à l'est d'Antalya jusque dans la province d'Içel (Mersin). C'est une plante précoce qui fleurit déjà en mars et au début d'avril. Son labelle, trilobé à la base, est long de 11-13 mm. This wonderful Ophrys was originally described from the north-west corner of Lesbos, but subsequently found on the Aegean coast of Turquey. Strangely it was not opposite Lesbos, but more to the South! Considéré au départ comme un endémique du nord-ouest de Lesbos, ce splendide Ophrys a été découvert ensuite sur la côte égéenne de Turquie, mais, de façon curieuse, bien plus au sud que Lesbos. This wonderful species has a very restricted distribution in the province of Antalya (southern Turkey) where it flowers early, in March. It's a highly endangered species. In 2009, 24 plants distributed on 4 sites were discovered, but it's probable that other growing places still exist (Rainer Wegener, pers. comm.) Cette merveilleuse espèce a une répartition très restreinte dans la province d'Antalya en Turquie méridionale, où elle fleurit tôt, en mars. C'est une espèce rare, fortement menacée par la récolte du salep. En 2009, 24 plantes réparties en 4 populations, ont été découvertes, mais il est possible qu'il en exite d'autres colonies (Rainer Wegener, comm. pers.) O. olympiotissa is a very narrow endemic of the southern foothills of mount Olympos in Thessaly. For the time being two populations with something around one hundred plants have been spotted. This is the northenmost member of the group in Greece. It's a slender plant to 50 cm tall which carries as many as 13 flowers. The lip length varies from 9.6 to 13 mm; it's color is middle-brown to dark brown and the macula is highly variable as can be seen on the photos beneath. It flowers from the end of April to the beginning of June. Although sharing with O. argolica and O. delphinensis the same pollinator, Anthophora plagiata, it differs from these two species by important morphological characteristics and geographical isolation. In this way it perfectly deserves the specific status. O. olympiotissa est un endémique étroit des contreforts méridionaux du mont Olympe en Thessalie. On n'a découvert jusqu'à présent que deux populations totalisant une centaine de plantes. C'est, en Grèce, l'espèce la plus septentrionale du groupe. Il s'agit d'une plante élancée pouvant atteindre 50 cm de hauteur et porter jusqu'à 13 fleurs. La longueur du labelle est comprise entre 9,6 et 13 mm. Sa couleur varie d'un brun moyen à un brun sombre et il porte une macule très variable comme on en jugera en regardant les photos qui suivent. La floraison s'étend de la fin avril au début juin. Bien que partageant le même pollinisateur, Anthophora plagiata, avec O. argolica et O. delphinensis, elle s'en distingue par des caractéristiques morphologiques importantes et son isolement géographique.
