This is an nine species group of oriental distribution. O. attica is the most western one, reaching the Ionian islands. On the other side, O. khuzestanica stretches out as far as Iran and O. abchasica as far as Azerbaijan. The wonderful O. kotschyi is endemic to Cyprus.

This is an oriental species. Its distribution area extends from South Albania to Western Anatolia and Israel. The plant can be 35 cm tall with as many as 12 flowers. Sepals are green; the dorsal one bent over the gynosteme. The spread out lip is 7-12.5 mm long. L'aire de répartition de cette espèce orientale s'étend du sud de l'Albanie à l'Anatolie occidentale et à Israël. La plante peut atteindre 35 cm de haut et porter jusqu"à 12 fleurs. As far as the situation on the island of Lesbos is concerned, see what is said under the next species, O. bucephala This is an oriental species, extending from the eastern Aegean Island of Greece probably to the south of Iran. The type specimen was collected on Samos, or on Chios, or in nearby Anatolia during the famous voyage to the Levant made in 1700 by Joseph Pitton de Tournefort. Aubriet who was in the party, made watercolours of that type as well as of those of O. iricolor, O. ferrum-equinum and O. mammosa. These iconotypes were described one century later, in 1800, by Desfontaines. The watercolour shows a flower with white sepals. In his paper about the O. umbilicata group in Israel, Asaf Shifman recorded extensive morphological data about Ophrys of this group gathered in Israel and compared them to the forms growing on Cyprus and Rhodes. For O. umbilicata the comparison was made with plants so named on Cyprus. Comparison of the dimensions of the lip, the sepals and petals, the bract and the ovary shows that the O. umbilicata form from Israel is smaller than the O. umbilicata from Cyprus in almost all parameters. For instance, the mean length of the lip is 15.71% shorter in the Israeli form. Therefore the author is of the opinion that the Israeli form is a new subspecies of O. umbilicata. O. umbilicata subsp. beerii is quite rare in the north and the center of the country, much more common in the south at the north of the Negev region. Flowering time is from February to April in the north of Israel, from mid-January to mid-March in the south of the country. Length of the lip: 8.5-12 mm; length of sepals: 7-11 mm; dorsal sepal bent forward on the column; 4-15 flowers on a plant reaching 40 cm tall. Dans son article consacré au groupe d'O. umbilicata en Israël, Asaf Shifman a collationné un grand nombre de données morphologiques des Ophrys de ce groupe trouvés en Israël et les a comparées aux formes qui existent à Chypre et à Rhodes. Pour O. umbilicata, la comparaison s'est faite avec les plantes chypriotes attribuées à cette espèce. La comparaison des dimensions du labelle, des sépales et des pétales, de la bractée et de l'ovaire montre que la forme israélienne d'O. umbilicata est plus petite que la forme chypriote pour presque tous ces paramètres. A titre d'exemple, la longueur moyenne du labelle est 15,71% plus courte en Israël. L'opinion de l'auteur est que tout ceci justifie la création d'une nouvelle sous-espèce israélienne d'O. umbilicata. O. umbilicata subsp. beerii est rare dans le nord et le centre du pays, beaucoup plus fréquent dans le sud, au nord de la région du Néguev. La floraison s'échelonne de février à avril dans le nord d'Israël, de la mi-janvier à la mi-mars dans le sud du pays. Longueur du labelle: 8,5-12 mm; longueur des sépales: 7-11 mm; le sépale dorsal rabattu sur la colonne; de 4 à 15 fleurs sur une inflorescence atteignant 40 cm de haut. On the island of Lesbos, it appears to exist a cline of size of the flowers of O. umbilicata: they vary from very small ones to very large ones. It seems to be the plants in the upper part of this interval of variability which received the name O. bucephala. Slides 5-6 under O. umbilicata show transitional forms between the two species. Flowers of these plants were smaller than those of O. bucephala. Around May 10, 2009 the species was at the very end of its flowering period and it was very difficult to still find flowers good enough to be snapped. Il semble que ce soient les plantes dont les fleurs occupent la partie supérieure de l'intervalle de variation qui ont été appelées O. bucephala. Les dias 5-6 d'O. umbilicata montrent des formes intermédiaires entre les deux espèces. Ces fleurs étaient plus petites que celles d'O. bucephala. Vers le 10 mai 2009, l'espèce était à l'extrême fin de sa floraison et il était devenu très difficile de trouver des fleurs encore photographiables. This oriental species is known from Cyprus and Israel, in the latter country being very rare and of local occurence. The species was of course also discovered in Syria. It flowers more early than O. umbilicata and has larger flowers, the lip being 9-14 mm long; the length of that of O. umbilicata is between 7 and 12.5 mm. The yellow edge around the lip, the species gets its name from, is not always present. Cette espèce orientale est connue de Chypre et d'Israël, rare et localisée dans ce dernier pays. On l'a bien entendu aussi découverte en Syrie. Elle fleurit plus tôt q'O. umbilicata et ses fleurs sont plus grandes, la longueur du labelle variant de 9 à 14 mm alors que celui d'O. umbilicata mesure de 7 à 12,5 mm. La bordure jaune du labelle, dont l'espèce tire son nom, n'est pas toujours bien développée. In a paper devoted to the Ophrys umbilicata group in Israel, Asaf Shifman compares the populations of Israeli and Cypriot O. flavomarginata. This species is a rare Ophrys in Israel, being limited to some ridges with a particular geology along the shores south of the city of Netanya. From this region Baumann & Baumann described in 2005 O. umbilicata subsp. latilabris which is completely different from all know forms of O. umbilicata in the Eastern Mediterranean bassin. In fact it refers to O. flavomarginata. In depth morphological studies have shown that compared to Cypriot O. flavomarginata, Israeli flowers have a shorter and narrower lip, longer and wider dorsal sepal, somewhat longer lateral sepals, longer and wider petals, longer and wider bract, that lip margins are more spread out and more greenish-yellowish and the lateral lobes are more acuminate. For all these reasons, Asaf Shifman has upgraded O. umbilicata subsp. latilabris Baumann & Baumann to specific level. Note: The second slide beneath, latilabris 2, most probably belongs to another taxon. Cette espèce, très rare en Israël, est limitée à quelques crêtes côtières, à la géologie particulière, situées au sud de la ville de Netanya. C'est de cette région que Baumann et Baumann ont décrit en 2005 O. umbilicata subsp. latilabris, un Ophrys tout à fait différent de toutes les formes d'O. umbilicata connues dans l'est du bassin méditerranéen. Il se rattache en fait à O. flavomarginata. Des études morphologiques poussées ont montré que comparées aux O. flavomarginata chypriotes, les fleurs des plantes israéliennes ont un labelle plus court et plus étroit, un sépale dorsal plus long et large, des sépales latéraux un peu plus longs, des pétales plus longs et plus larges, une bractée plus longue et plus large et que les bords du labelle sont plus étalés et plus verdâtres, jaunâtres. Ses lobes latéraux sont aussi plus acuminés. Pour toutes ces raisons, Asaf Shifman a élevé O. umbilicata subsp. latilabris Baumann & Baumann au niveau spécifique. This is an oriental species distributed from south-east Anatolia to the provinces of Khuzestan and Fars in Iran, extending southwards in the Zagros Mountains to the latitude of the north of the Persian Gulf, which makes it the most south-oriental of any Ophrys species. The slender plant is 20 - 60 cm tall with up to 12 rather small flowers. The lip is 7 - 10.5 mm long and the dorsal sepal, standing up or recurved over the gynosteme, is green sometimes washed witish or pinkish. Please note quite important differences between Turkish plants and Iranian ones, two of the latter having been snapped close to the locus classicus of the species. Cette espèce moyen-orientale est répartie du sud-est de l'Anatolie aux provinces du Khuzestan et de Fars en Iran, s'étendant vers le sud dans le Massif du Zagros jusqu'à la latitude du nord du Golfe Persique, ce qui en fait l'espèce d'Ophrys qui s'étend le plus loin vers le sud-est. La plante élancée est haute de 20 à 60 cm. Elle porte jusqu'à 12 assez petites fleurs. Le labelle est long de 7 à 10,5 mm et le sépale dorsal, dressé ou rabattu sur le gynostème, est vert, parfois teinté de blanchâtre ou de rosâtre. This most splendid Ophrys is endemic to Cyprus where there are very nice populations in the south of the island.
