Only five species and one subspecies make up this group. Its distribution is essentialy French and Italian. O. sphegodes reaches Britain and the extreme south of Belgium, where only a few plants are known, and are of irregular appearance. O. brutia is a narrow endemic of Calabria in southern Italy.
All species of this group have a stigmatic cavity of a lighter colour than the central part of the lip, which helps telling them apart from those of the close O. incubacea B16 group where both lips and stigmatic cavities have the same dark colour. This explains why both O. virescens and O. araneola have been moved to the latter group: they have dark stigmatic cavities.

This species, with rather small flowers, opens the Ophrys season along the French Mediterranean coast, where it flowers already in the second fortnight of February, and already end of December in Nice hinterland, would the season be a good one, sometimes with other early species like O. lupercalis and O. arachnitiformis. It's always a pleasure to spot it, as you know then that the whole of the Ophrys season is just in front of you. Cette espèce aux fleurs assez petites ouvre la saison des Ophrys le long de la côte méditerranéenne française où, si la saison est favorable, elle fleurit déjà dans la seconde quinzaine de février, même dès la fin décembre dans l'arrière-pays niçois, accompagnée d'autres espèces précoces, comme O. lupercalis et O. arachnitiformis. On la découvre toujours avec plaisir, car elle marque le tout début de la saison des Ophrys, en France tout au moins. The demonstration has recently (2006) been done by Jean Devillers-Terschuren, Pierre Delforge and Pierre Devillers that O. sphegodes is the correct name of this species, and not O. aranifera (see bibliography). The locus typicus of O. sphegodes is in the South of England, this plant having mainly northern affinities. Northwards it just reaches the Belgian border, where only two or three plants are known in the extreme South of the country. Southwards its limits are imperfectly known, although it certainly grows in the South of France, in the departements of Hérault and Aveyron. I have tentatively put here slide 7, with a plant showing the characteristic stigmatic cavity lighter than the central part of the lip, but the overall look of this flower doesn't match very well to O. sphegodes. Slides 10-11 are quite interesting, as they were made in Kent, England, the terra typica of the species, and they show very well the light colour of the basal field and stigmatic cavity, characteristic of O. sphegodes in its typical haunts. La preuve vient d'être fournie par Jean Devillers-Terschuren, Pierre Delforge et Pierre Devillers qu'O. sphegodes, et non O. aranifera, est le nom correct de cette espèce (voyez la bibliographie). Le locus typicus d'O. sphegodes est dans le Sud de l'Angleterre, aussi cette plante est-elle plutôt d'affinités septentrionales. Au nord elle atteint la Belgique où on ne connait que deux ou trois plantes dans l'extrême sud du pays. Les limites méridionales de l'espèce sont incertaines encore que sa présence dans le Sud de la France, en particulier dans les départements de l'Hérault et de l'Aveyron, soit bien documentée. Ce n'est qu'avec hésitation que j'ai fait figurer la dia n°7; malgré la cavité stigmatique nettement plus claire que le centre du labelle, une des caractéristiques de l'espèce, l'aspect général de cette fleur ne correspond pas bien à O. sphegodes. Les dias 10 et 11 sont intéressantes car elles ont été faites en Angleterre, dans le Kent, la terra typica de l'espèce, et montrent bien la couleur claire du champ basal et de la cavité stigmatique, caractéristique d'O. sphegodes dans la région d'où provenait le type. This species grows in middle central Italy. It has small flowers, the lip length being 7-9 mm, hence frequent confusions with the Croatian O. tommasinii which has not the basal field and stigmatic cavity lighter than the central part of the lip, and belongs then to the O. incubacea B16 group (B16-7). O. ausonia flowers on the late, from mid May to June. C'est une espèce d'Italie centrale, fréquemment confondue avec O. tommasinii à cause de ses petites fleurs, la longueur du labelle variant de 7 à 9 mm. Mais O. tommasinii n'a pas, comme O. ausonia le champ basal et la cavité stigmatique nettement plus clairs que le centre du labelle, et appartient par conséquent au groupe d'O. incubacea B16 group (B16-7). La floraison tardive s'étale de la mi-mai au mois de juin. This is a central Italian species, flowering very much on the late, from the end of May to July, being perhaps the last Italian Ophrys to flower. At that season, grass is already very tall, and so is the Ophrys which sometimes "towering" to 90 cm. With a length of the lip of 13-20 mm, the flowers are rather large and the basal field is much paler than the center of the lip. This characteristic is absent in the plants flowering also on the late in the south-eastern corner of France, which have often be named O. majellensis, but are of course no majellensis. They have been named O. incubacea subsp. castri-caesaris by H. Van Looken in 2005. Here is now a good opportunity to compare the two plants as castri-caesaris is illustrated in group B16. (B16-1 β). Cette espèce du centre de l'Italie fleurit très tard, de la fin mai à juillet et c'est sans doute le dernier Ophrys italien qui fleurisse. A cette saison la plante entre en compétition avec l'herbe très haute, et elle peut atteindre 90 cm. Ses fleurs, dont le labelle a une longueur de 13-20 mm, sont de taille moyenne à grande, et le champ basal est toujours nettement plus clair que le centre du labelle, ce qui l'éloigne tout à fait des Ophrys des Alpes-Maritimes que l'on appelle souvent O. majellensis et qui, de toute évidence, n'en sont pas! Ils ont été décrits comme O. incubacea subsp. castri-caesaris par H. Van Looken en 2005. Voici l'occasion de comparer les deux taxons, castri-caesaris est illustré dans le groupe B16. (B16-1 β). This outstanding species shares characteristics with three different groups of Ophrys, those of O. incubacea, sphegodes and lunulata. It is isolated in Calabria, the deep South of the Italian peninsula, where it represents perhaps a ancestral species of the common stock of these groups, having outlived the glaciation in some southern refuge over there. Cette espèce remarquable présente des caractéristiques de trois groupes différents d'Ophrys, ceux d'O. incubacea, sphegodes et lunulata. Isolée tout au sud de la péninsule italienne, en Calabre, elle représente peut-être une espèce ancestrale du tronc commun de ces groupes, ayant survécu à la glaciation dans un refuge méridional. As it was described as a subspecies of O. sphegodes I have put O. grassoana in this group although it doesnt show the discriminating chatacteristics of the group. Furthermore it probably deserves the species taxonomic level. As far as known for the time being, this plant is limited to the northern foothills of mount Etna, Sicily, where it grows on lava flows something around 80 years old. Most known populations are rather limited in individuals, something around 10 plants and the whole of the population must be around 200 plants. Description of the holotype: plant 25 cm tall with 7 flowers; dorsal sepal is 16 mm long, 7 mm broad; petals are green, 12 mm long, 4 mm broad; lip is 14 mm long, 8 mm broad, of a brownish black color. Pilosity is mainly limited to lateral lobes. The basal field is darker than the central part of the lip. Cette plante étant décrite comme sous-espèce d'O. sphegodes, je l'ai classée dans ce groupe auquel elle n'appartient certainement pas puisqu'elle n'en montre pas les caractéristiques principales. De plus elle mériterait certainement d'être élevée au rang spécifique. Pour autant que nous sachions, elle est limitée aux contreforts nord de l'Etna, Sicile, où elle pousse sur des coulées de lave âgées d'environ 80 ans. La plupart des colonies connues ne contiennent qu'un nombre restreint d'individus, dix environ, et la population est estimée à quelques 200 plantes. Description de l'holotype: la plante, haute de 25 cm porte 7 fleurs. Le sépale dorsal a 16 mm de long, 7 de large; les pétales verts sont longs de 12 mm, larges de 4; le labelle a 14 mm de long, 8 de large. Il est d'un brun noirâtre et sa pilosité est essentiellement limitée aux lobes latéraux. Le champ basal est plus foncé que le centre du labelle.
