This group is made up of three species. One of them, O. insectifera is spread over a vast territory and is the Orphys species that proceeds the most to the north, reaching south Scandinavia. The two other ones are narrow endemics, O. aymoninii in the French Massif Central and O. subinsectifera in the north of Spain.

This most remarquable plant is a very narrow endemic of the south rim of the Grands Causses, in the South of the Massif Central, France, where it flowers in May and early June. This common Ophrys is interesting as it is the species extending the more to the North, reaching Norway, Sweden and Finland. It is by no way common in the South of Europe, and slides 13 - 14 are very interesting as they show plants from northern Greece, a country where the species is of utmost rarity, limited to only very few sites. In Northern Spain, at least in La Rioja and Catalonia, grows a variety with a very flat lip, almost not recurved downward (photos 17-23). In Bulgaria it's the rarest Ophrys species. Cet Ophrys commun est intéressant car c'est l'espèce qui s'avance le plus vers le Nord, atteignant la Norvège, la Suède et la Finlande. L'espèce est par contre rare dans le Sud de l'Europe, et les dias 13 - 14 sont particulièrement intéressantes car elles montrent des fleurs photographiées dans le Nord de la Grèce, pays où elle est rarissime et limitée à quelques stations, voire peut-être une seule. Dans le nord de l'Espagne, au moins dans La Rioja et en Catalogne, il existe une variété au labelle très peu rabattu vers le bas et optiquement plan (photos 17-23). Until recently this species was still an object of debate between specialists, but it appears to be well individualized by its pollinator Sterictiphora gastrica. For long it was seen as an endemic species of the Spanish slopes of the Pyrenees but in 2013 it was discovered in Coustouge municipality on the French side of the mountain range. Its pollinator was also spotted there and some hybrids with O. insectifera were discovered. This is a slender plant, up to 45 cm tall with many small flowers. The lip length is 6-10 mm instead of 9-12 mm for O. insectifera (but note that small flower varieties of O. insctifera are known all over its range, as well as varieties with a yellow edge on the lip). It flowers in May-June. Cette espèce a sucité de nombreux débats entre spécialistes, mais elle semble bien individualisée par son pollinisateur Sterictiphora gastrica L'espèce fut longtemps considérée comme endémique du versant espagnol des Pyrénées mais on la découvrit en 2013 sur le versant français. Le pollinisateur y est aussi actif et des hybrides avec O. insectifera ont été observés. C'est une plante élancée qui peut atteindre 45 cm et porte de nombreuses petites fleurs. La longueur de leur labelle est comprise entre 6 et 10 mm alors qu'elle varie de 9 à 12 mm chez O. insectifera. Notez cependant que des variétés à petites fleurs d'O. insctifera sont connues sur toute son aire de répartition, tout comme des variétés aux labelles bordés de jaune. La floraison tombe en mai-juin.
