The Spanish archipelago of Balearic Islands is the westernmost archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea. It is made up of four islands, Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, Formentera and the islet Illa de Cabrera.
With 3640 square kilometers, Mallorca is by far the largest island. It is also the highest, its highest mountain, Puig Major in the Serra de Tramuntana, culminating at 1445 m.
On that mountain such northern orchids as Ophrys insectifera and Gymnadenia conopsea grow. This is for sure one of the most southern locality of O. insectifera even if it was spotted in the Cosenza province, Calabria, Italy.
Some remarquable endemic Ophrys exist in the Balearic Islands as O. decembris, O. fabrella, O. spectabilis and O. balearica.
Most photos on this sheet were made during a trip to Mallorca made on April 5 to 10, 2012.

L'archipel espagnol des Îles Baléares est l'archipel le plus occidental de la Méditerranée. Il se compose de quatre îles principales, Majorque, Minorque, Ibiza, Formentera et d'un îlot, l'Illa de Cabrera.
Avec ses 3640 km carrés, Majorque est de loin la plus grande île de l'archipel. C'est aussi la plus élevée, sa plus haute montagne, le Puig Major dans la Serra de Tramuntana, culminant à 1445 m.
Sur cette montagne des orchidées plus nordiques comme Ophrys insectifera et Gymnadenia conopsea sont signalées. Il s'agit certainement d'une des stations les plus méridionales d'O. insectifera, même si celui-ci est signalé dans la province de Cosenza, Calabre, Italie.
Quelques Ophrys endémiques remarquables existent dans l'archipel. C'est le cas d'O. decembris, O. fabrella, O. spectabilis et O. balearica.
Les photos présentées sur cette page ont surtout été faites lors d'un voyage à Majorque du 5 au 10 avril 2012.

A2-13. O. decembris S. Moingeon & J.-M. Moingeon 2011

During a trip to the Balearic Island of Mallorca, in early December 2010, the two descriptors were surprised to discover a very early flowering Ophrys belonging to the O. fusca group.
O. decembris is quite a short plant bearing 2 to 5 little flowers spirally arranged along the flowering spike. Lateral sepals are 7 mm long and 5 mm broad. Petals are 3 to 4 mm long and 1 to 1.5 mm broad. The rather little lip is 9 to 13 mm long, 7 to 9 mm broad. The rather short basal groove contains a white pilosity. The lateral lobes make a 35° to 45° angle with the median one and there is rarely a narrow yellow edge around the lip.
Flowering time is from early December to the end of January.
Lors d'un voyage effectué au début du mois de décembre 2010 dans l'île espagnole de Majorque, les deux descripteurs ont eu la surprise de découvrir un Ophrys du groupe d'O. fusca à floraison particulièrement précoce.
O. decembris est une plante assez basse qui porte de 2 à 5 petites fleurs disposées en spirale le long de la tige. Les sépales latéraux sont longs de 7 mm et larges de 5 mm. Les pétales ont de 3 à 4 mm de long, 1 à 1,5 mm de large. L'assez petit labelle est long de 9 à 13 mm, large de 7 à 9 mm. Le sillon basal, assez court, contient une pilosité blanche. Les lobes latéraux forment un angle de 35° à 45° avec le lobe central et le labelle n'est que rarement muni d'une étroite bordure jaune.
La floraison s'échelonne du début décembre à la fin janvier.

A7-1. O. fabrella H. F. Paulus & Ayasse ex P. Delforge 2004

This lovely little Ophrys is endemic to the Balearic Islands, Spain.
The plant is very slender and the scape has 1 to 4 small flowers. The lip is 6 - 9.5 mm long, it has a broad yellow edge. Its base is sometimes depressed, which is a characteristic of the group.
The plant flowers quite early, from March into mid-April.
Ce joli petit Ophrys est endémique aux Îles Baléares.
La plante est très grêle et porte de 1 à 4 petites fleurs. La longueur de leur labelle est comprise entre 6 et 9,5 mm. Il est largement bordé de jaune et sa base est parfois déprimée, ce qui est une caractéristique du groupe.
La floraison est assez précoce, de mars à la mi-avril.

A12-12. O. funditorum nomen nudum

Since a long time, O. algarvensis (A12-2) from the south of Iberic Peninsula and O. vasconica (A12-8) from northern Spain and adjacent regions of southern France have been suspected to be of paleohybrid origin between an O. fusca s.l. species and an O. omegaifera group species, in this case probably O. dyris. This because they show a small groove at the base of their lips, groove absent in O. dyris.
A third species with the same origin has recently been added, O. lenae (A12-12) from Portugal.
A fourth species with the same paleohybrid origin between O. fusca and O. omegaifera groups also exists on the Balearic Island of Mallorca.
I present it here under the nomen nudum of O. funditorum (from the Latin word funditor, -oris meaning "slinger". Balearic slingers were highly esteemed soldiers during the Antiquity and played an important role, for instance, in Hannibal's Second Punic War against Rome and in Cesar's Gallic Wars).
This plant is usualy refered to O. dyris but true O. dyris without groove have not been seen on Mallorca by Helmut Presser nor by the author of this note.
Il y a longtemps qu'O. algarvensis (A12-2) du sud de la Péninsule Ibérique et O. vasconica (A12-8) du nord de l'Espagne et des régions françaises voisines sont soupçonnés d'avoir une origine paléohybride entre une espèce du groupe d'O. fusca et une autre du groupe d'O. omegaifera, dans ce cas très probablement O. dyris, à cause du léger sillon qu'ils présentent à la base de leurs labelles, sillon absent chez O. dyris.
Récemment une troisième espèce de même origine paléohybride entre les mêmes groupes vient d'être décrite. Il s'agit d'O. lenae (A12-12) du Portugal.
Une quatrième espèce, elle aussi d'origine paléohybride entre les groupes d'O. fusca et d'O. omegaifera existe à Majorque (Espagne, Îles Baléares).
La voici présenté sous le nom de travail d'O. funditorum (du mot latin funditor, -oris, frondeur, en hommage aux frondeurs baléares, un corps de soldats d'élite très appréciés dans l'Antiquité. Ils ont, entre autres, joué un grand rôle dans la Seconde Guerre Punique d'Hannibal contre Rome et dans la Guerre des Gaules de César).
Cette plante est en général déterminée comme O. dyris mais de vrais O. dyris, dépourvus de sillon basal, n'ont été vus à Majorque ni par Helmut Presser, ni par l'auteur de cette note.

B1-1. O. speculum Link 1800
O. speculum susp. orientalis H. F. Paulus = O. eos P. Devillers & J. Devillers-Terschuren 2009

Prof. Hannes Paulus has now shown that eastern plants of this species are pollinated by the bee Dasiscolia ciliata subsp. araratensis instead of the typical subspecies Dasiscolia ciliata which pollinates western plants. The eastern plants are hence considered forming a distinct subspecies, O. speculum subsp. orientalis.

Please note that this subspecies has recently (2009) been upgraded to specific level with the name Ophrys eos P. Devillers & J. Devillers-Terschuren 2009.
Le Professeur Hannes Paulus (Vienne, Autriche) a montré que les plantes orientales de cette espèce (à l'est de l'Italie) sont pollinisées par l'abeille Dasiscolia ciliata subsp. araratensis au lieu de Dasiscolia ciliata qui pollinise les plantes typiques, occidentales. (Le locus typicus d'O. speculum est au Portugal!) Les plantes de l'est du bassin méditerranéen sont par conséquent considées comme appartenant à une sous-espèce particulière, O. speculum subsp. orientalis.

B3-1. O. bombyliflora Link 1799

This very well known small Ophrys is absolutely constant all over its large distribution area which extends form the Canary islands (where it is the only Ophrys species) to western Anatolia and North Africa.
Ce petit Ophrys bien connu est absolument constant dans toute son énorme aire de répartition qui s'étend des îles Canaries (où c'est la seule espèce d'Ophrys) à l'Anatolie occidentale et à l'Afrique du Nord.

B3-2. O. tenthredinifera Willdenow 1805

The type specimen of O. tenthredinifera was collected in North Africa, Barbaria (i.e. modern Algeria) by Desfontaines and described by Willdenow in 1805. To this O. tenthredinifera sensu stricto belong, of course North African plants (slide 5-6-7), but also those growing in Spain (slides 1 to 4) and in the South of France (Languedoc).
These plants have a relatively long lip with poorly developed shoulders and gibbosities and they lack a big tuft of hairs above the appendix.
In Algeria, where there is clearly two waves of blossoming, the early taxon, flowering from early February to early April is attributed to O. tenthredinifera s. str.
The plant is not at all rare in Numidia, having been spotted in something around thirty sites.

Le type d'O. tenthredinifera provient de Barbarie (Algérie). C'est à cet O. tenthredinifera sensu stricto qu'appartiennent bien entendu les plantes d'Afrique du Nord (dia 5 à 7), mais aussi d'Espagne (dias 1 à 4),du Languedoc et des Baléares.
Elles ont un labelle étroit, aux épaules peu marquées et ne présentant que des gibbosités assez faibles. Elles sont dépourvues d'une importante touffe de poils au-dessus de l'appendice.
En Algérie, où il y a nettement deux vagues de floraison, c'est le taxon précoce qui est rattaché à O. tenthredinifera s. str.
La plante n'est pas rare en Numidie où elle a été observée dans une trentaine de sites.

B3-2 α. O. spectabilis (Kreutz & Zelzsny) Paulus 2011


Synonym : O. tenthredinifera Willdenow 1805 subsp. spectabilis Kreutz & H. Zelesny 2007


O. tenthredinifera s. str. exists on the Balearic Islands, but it has been shown that there exists on Mallorca a second taxon of the group.
O. spectabilis is a taller plant, up to 30 cm, flowering later than the typical O. tenthredinifera.
The scape holds up to 8 very large flowers separated from each other by long internodes. The very large lip, 20 - 24.5 mm long and 16 - 19.5 mm broad (11 - 16 mm long in typical O. tenthredinifera), is very conspicuous and the difference of size between the two "subspecies" probably corresponds to adaptations to different pollinators. It is Eucera nigrilabris for O. tenthredinifera s.str. in Spain, the Balearic Islands, France and Marocco, but the pollinator of O. spectabilis is still unknown.
The stigmatic cavity base of O. spectabilis is green, its interior topped by a brown transverse band, giving to the cavity a distinctly two-coloured aspect. Staminodial dots are also green.
The plant is rare, limited to only a few localities on Mallorca.
It has been recently (2011) upgraded to specific level by Professor Hannes F. Paulus (Vienna, Austria) because of its large flowers, probably adapted to another pollinator, and a later flowering time.
O. tenthredinifera s. str. existe aux Baléares, mais on a mis en évidence qu'il existe, à Majorque, un deuxième taxon du groupe.
O. spectabilis est une plante nettement plus robuste, jusqu'à 30 cm de haut, fleurissant plus tard qu'O. tenthredinifera.
L'inflorescence, très lâche, porte jusqu'à 8 très grandes fleurs. Leur labelle mesure 20 - 24,5 mm de long et 16 - 19,5 mm de large (contre 11 - 16 mm de long chez O. tenthredinifera typique), ce qui laisse supposer l'adaptation à un autre pollinisateur, encore inconnu. Celui d'O. tenthredinifera s. str. est Eucera nigrilabris en Espagne, aux Baléares, en France et au Maroc, celui d'O. spectabilis est encore inconnu.
La base de la cavité stigmatique d'O. spectabilis est verte, et porte dans sa partie supérieure une bande transverse brune qui lui donne un aspect nettement bicolore. Les points staminodiaux sont toujours verts.
Il s'agit d'une plante rare limitée à quelques localités de Majorque.
Elle a été récemment (2011) élevée au rang spécifique par le Professeur Hannes F. Paulus (Vienne, Autriche) sur la base de fleurs nettement plus grandes, sans doute adaptées à un autre pollinisateur, et d'une floraison plus tardive.

B16-1. O. incubacea Bianca 1842

This species is still very often called O. atrata which is a junior synonym.
Slides 8 to 11 are made in Croatia, on the Dalmatian coast, close to Primosten, where O. incubacea is of common occurence.
Cette espèce est encore souvent appelée O. atrata. Mais ce nom, donné illégitimement par Lindley, est un synonyme postérieur.
Les diapositives 8 à 11 sont faites en Croatie, près de Primosten sur la côte dalmate, où O. incubacea est très commun.

B18-4.O. balearica P.Delforge 1990

This species is endemic to Balearic Islands where it has an extended flowering period (end of March to June), and can be found to an altitude of 450 m.
It sometimes looks like O. catalaunica (B18-5) but differs from this latter species by a longer lip and a smaller macula, more situated toward the top of the lip, and more rarely bordered with white.
Cette espèce est endémique des îles Baléares, où elle elle a une longue période de floraison (de la fin mars à juin), et s'élève en altitude jusqu'à 450m.
Elle ressemble à O. catalaunica, mais s'en distingue par un labelle plus allongé, une macule plus petite, située plus à l'extrémité du labelle, et plus rarement bordée de blanc.
