HYBRIDS - HYBRIDES

In the field, when two or more species are present on the same site, it's always possible, although quite rarely, to find some chance hybrids...
Their rarity comes from the fact that they are the result of errors made by pollinating insects. They make mistakes by landing on an Ophrys flower which is without sexual attractiveness for them, and this is not of frequent occurence.
This weak frequence of hybrids prooves the efficiency of the isolation mechanisms separating Ophrys species.
When pollinating an Euophrys, the bee introduces its head into the stigmatic cavity of the flower, but a pollinator of a Pseudophrys puts the end of its abdomen into the stigmatic cavity. It follows that hybrids between Pseudophrys and Euophrys are still more exceptional than Euophrys hybrids. The Pseudophrys of the various O. fusca s.l. groups are so close together that many of their hybrids, which certainly exist, generaly go unnoticed. They are so difficult to detect that almost anybody wouldn't dare to descibe them, although this has already been done.
Hybridization is also a mechanism of speciation in the genus Ophrys, when another species of bee adapts itself to the hybrids and isolates them from their parent species. Among the hybrid species already present on this site, let's mention O. normanii (O. chestermanii x O. tenthredinifera) and O. delphinensis (O. argolica x O. cornuta).
All hybrids have not yet received names. If a name has been given, it is indicated in the second column of the table. Otherwise this remains blank. In the first column, hybrids are listed alphabetically. So, for example, O. bombyliflora x O. fuciflora precedes O. bombyliflora x O. scolopax. The reverse combination O. scolopax x O. bombyliflora is not introduced.

Quand plusieurs espèces d'Ophrys sont présentes sur le même site, on peut, avec de la chance, trouver des hybrides.
Leur rareté provient du fait qu'ils sont le résultat d'une erreur commise par le pollinisateur qui tente une pseudocopulation sur une espèce sans attrait sexuel pour lui. Leur faible fréquence prouve aussi l'efficacité des barrières d'isolement qui séparent les espèces р l'intérieur du genre.
La pseudocopulation des Euophrys est céphalique alors qu'elle est abdominale chez les Pseudophrys. Il s'ensuit que les hybrides d' Euophrys par Pseudophrys sont encore plus rares que les hybrides d'Euophrys. Les Pseudophrys des différents groupes d'O. fusca s.l. sont tellement voisins les uns des autres que leurs hybrides, qui existent certainement, passent en général inapercçus. Ils sont tellement difficiles à repérer que peu de gens se risquent à les décrire, bien que cela ait déjà été fait!.
L'hybridation est aussi un mécanisme de spéciation chez les Ophrys si une autre espèce d'insecte s'adapte aux hybrides et les isole des espèces parentes. Parmi les espèces hybridogènes qui figurent déjà sur ce site, citons O. normanii (O. chestermanii x O. tenthredinifera) et O. delphinensis (O. argolica x O. cornuta).
Tous les hybrides ne sont pas nommés. Lorsqu'ils ont un nom, celui-ci figure dans la seconde colonne du tableau. Dans le cas contraire elle reste vide. Dans la première colonne les hybrides sont rangés alphabétiquement. Ainsi O. bombyliflora x O. fuciflora prщcшde O. bombyliflora x O. scolopax et la combinaison inverse, O. scolopax x O. bombyliflora n'est pas introduite.

O. araneola x O. sphegodes 1	O. xjeanpertii Walter Van den Bussche is of the opinion that this hybrid is of common occurrence, in the north of France, on the chalk grasslands where both O. araneola and O. sphegodes grow together. The flowering period of the hybrid is halfway between those of its parents. Walter Van den Bussche pense que cet hybride est fréquent, dans le nord de la France, sur les pelouses calcaires où poussent O. araneola et O. sphegodes.
