The O. tenthredinifera group has been the subject of a very interesting paper written by P.Devillers, J.Devillers-Terschuren and D.Tyteca (2003). They proved that under the name O. tenthredinifera many species, almost all of them very well known to nineteenth century botanists, were mixed all together, and had to be restored. So the group now holds 15 described species.
Le groupe d'O. tenthredinifera vient de faire l'objet d'un article passionnant de P.Devillers, J.Devillers-Terschuren et D.Tyteca (2003). Ils ont montré que plusieurs espèces, presque toutes bien connues des botanistes du 19ème siècle, étaient confondues sous le nom O. tenthredinifera, et doivent être considérées comme espèces à part entière. Le groupe contient actuellement 15 espèces décrites.

This very well known small Ophrys is absolutely constant all over its large distribution area which extends form the Canary islands (where it is the only Ophrys species) to western Anatolia and North Africa. Plants are very variable as far as stature and size of the flowers are concerned. For instance, in Libya flowers are very small. In the latter country, the main distribution area is in Cyrenaica, on the Green Mountain plateau at around 700 m a.s.l. Ce petit Ophrys bien connu est absolument constant dans toute son énorme aire de répartition qui s'étend des îles Canaries (où c'est la seule espèce d'Ophrys) à l'Anatolie occidentale et à l'Afrique du Nord. Les plantes sont très variables en ce qui concerne leur taille et celle de leurs fleurs. En Libye par exemple, les fleurs sont fort petites. Dans ce pays la plante existe surtout en Cyrénaïque, sur le plateau de la Montagne Verte à des altitudes d'environ 700 m. The type specimen of O. tenthredinifera was collected in North Africa, Barbaria (i.e. modern Algeria) by Desfontaines and described by Willdenow in 1805. To this O. tenthredinifera sensu stricto belong, of course North African plants (slide 5-6-7), but also those growing in Spain (slides 1 to 4) and in the South of France (Languedoc). These plants have a relatively long lip with poorly developed shoulders and gibbosities and they lack a big tuft of hairs above the appendix. In Algeria, where there is clearly two waves of blossoming, the early taxon, flowering from early February to early April is attributed to O. tenthredinifera s. str. The plant is not at all rare in Numidia, having been spotted in something around thirty sites. You will find more informations about it under the heading OPHRYS NEWS n°12. Le type d'O. tenthredinifera provient de Barbarie (Algérie). C'est à cet O. tenthredinifera sensu stricto qu'appartiennent bien entendu les plantes d'Afrique du Nord (dia 5 à 7), mais aussi d'Espagne (dias 1 à 4),du Languedoc et des Baléares. Elles ont un labelle étroit, aux épaules peu marquées et ne présentant que des gibbosités assez faibles. Elles sont dépourvues d'une importante touffe de poils au-dessus de l'appendice. En Algérie, où il y a nettement deux vagues de floraison, c'est le taxon précoce qui est rattaché à O. tenthredinifera s. str. O. tenthredinifera s. str. exists on the Balearic Islands, but it has been shown that there exists on Mallorca a second taxon of the group. O. spectabilis is a taller plant, up to 30 cm, flowering later than the typical O. tenthredinifera. The scape holds up to 8 very large flowers separated from each other by long internodes. The very large lip, 20 - 24.5 mm long and 16 - 19.5 mm broad (11 - 16 mm long in typical O. tenthredinifera), is very conspicuous and the difference of size between the two "subspecies" probably corresponds to adaptations to different pollinators. It is Eucera nigrilabris for O. tenthredinifera s.str. in Spain, the Balearic Islands, France and Marocco, but the pollinator of O. spectabilis is still unknown. The stigmatic cavity base of O. spectabilis is green, its interior topped by a brown transverse band, giving to the cavity a distinctly two-coloured aspect. Staminodial dots are also green. The plant is rare, limited to only a few localities on Mallorca. It has been recently (2011) upgraded to specific level by Professor Hannes F. Paulus (Vienna, Austria) because of its large flowers, probably adapted to another pollinator, and a later flowering time. O. tenthredinifera s. str. existe aux Baléares, mais on a mis en évidence qu'il existe, à Majorque, un deuxième taxon du groupe. O. spectabilis est une plante nettement plus robuste, jusqu'à 30 cm de haut, fleurissant plus tard qu'O. tenthredinifera. L'inflorescence, très lâche, porte jusqu'à 8 très grandes fleurs. Leur labelle mesure 20 - 24,5 mm de long et 16 - 19,5 mm de large (contre 11 - 16 mm de long chez O. tenthredinifera typique), ce qui laisse supposer l'adaptation à un autre pollinisateur, encore inconnu. Celui d'O. tenthredinifera s. str. est Eucera nigrilabris en Espagne, aux Baléares, en France et au Maroc, celui d'O. spectabilis est encore inconnu. La base de la cavité stigmatique d'O. spectabilis est verte, et porte dans sa partie supérieure une bande transverse brune qui lui donne un aspect nettement bicolore. Les points staminodiaux sont toujours verts. Il s'agit d'une plante rare limitée à quelques localités de Majorque. Elle a été récemment (2011) élevée au rang spécifique par le Professeur Hannes F. Paulus (Vienne, Autriche) sur la base de fleurs nettement plus grandes, sans doute adaptées à un autre pollinisateur, et d'une floraison plus tardive. This is a late flowering species growing in southern Portugal. Its flowers appear broader than those of O. tenthredinifera, their lip has well marked shoulders and stronger gibbosities. The lip is much more hairy than that of O. tenthredinifera and it usually has a stong tuft of hairs above the appendix. The distribution of O. ficalhoana could be more extensive, as many late-flowering populations have been spotted in the Iberian peninsula and North Africa, but are still poorly documented. Cette plante à floraison tardive pousse dans le sud du Portugal. Ses fleurs semblent plus larges que celles d'O. tenthredinifera, leur labelle a des épaules plus marquées et des gibbosités plus fortes. Il est plus velu que celui d'O. tenthredinifera et présente généralement une forte touffe de poils au-dessus de l'appendice. L'espèce pourrait être plus largement répandue, car plusieurs populations à floraison tardive ont été repérées dans la péninsule ibérique et en Afrique du Nord, mais n'ont pas fait, jusqu'à présent, l'objet d'études suffisantes. Ophrys of the O. tenthredinifera group from peninsular Italy have much smaller flowers than those of typical O. tenthredinifera and always have a conspicuous tuft of hairs above the appendix. They attract two different bees, Eucera clypeata and E. oraniensis. The plant grows from Tuscany to Campania and Apulia and is often quite common. The situation of the group appears to be extremely intricated in Sardinia, where probably many different species are present. Slides 1-2-9 show plants from monte Gargano, Apulia. Slides 3-4-5-6 show Sardinian plants, which belong perhaps to another species, but that, at least temporarily, I include in O. neglecta Slides 7-8 show a plant from monte Pollino, Calabria. Slides 12 to 18 are quite interesting as they show Croatian plants. They were very kindly given by Roko Cicmir (Zagreb, Croatia) who also provided the following comments : " It's a plant with very small flowers, for sure much closer to O. neglecta than to O. ulyssea recently described from the Ionian world by Pierre Delforge. The plant is very common in the Konavle district where it grows in thousands mixed with O. montenegrina. (The Konavle district is the southernmost tip of Croatia, southeast of Dubrovnik.) On the other hand, two sole plants were spotted on the Peljesac peninsula and Lastovo island. Although orchidologist having recently visited Dalmatia don't speak of any plant of the O. tenthredinifera group, O. villosa was already said to grow over there in 1872 by the Croatian botanist Schlosser, and O. tenthredinifera was mentioned in 1986 by Gölz & Reinhard." It appears that seeds of O. neglecta are brought from Italy to Dalmatia by the western trade winds, allowing the species to get a new stronghold over there. You will find more informations about it under the heading OPHRYS NEWS n°12. The species was also discovered in the South of Albania close to Vlorë at the latitude of the Italian city of Lecce (Stefan Hertel, 2018). Les Ophrys du groupe d'O. tenthredinifera qui poussent en Italie péninsulaire ont des fleurs bien plus petites que celles d'O. tenthredinifera sensu stricto, et présentent toujours une importante touffe de poils au-dessus de l'appendice. Ils attirent deux pollinisateurs différents, Eucera clypeata et E. oraniensis. Ils poussent en Toscane, dans le Latium, en Campanie et dans les Pouilles. La situation semble beaucoup plus compliquée en Sardaigne où plusieurs espèces, ayant des fleurs de tailles différentes et fleurissant à des époques différentes, sont sans doute présentes. Les dias 1-2-9 montrent des plantes du promontoire du Gargano dans les Pouilles. Les dias 3-4-5-6 montrent des plantes sardes qui appartiennent peut-être à une autre espèce, mais que je juge plus prudent de maintenir, au moins provisoirement, dans O. neglecta. Les dias 7-8 montrent une plante du monte Pollino, en Calabre. Les dias 12 à 18 sont très intéressantes car elles montrent des plantes croates. Elles ont gentiment été données par Roko Cicmir (Zagreb, Croatie) qui a fourni les informations suivantes : "Il s'agit de plantes à petites fleurs, bien plus proches d'O. neglecta que d'O. ulyssea, espèce récemment décrite du monde ionien par Pierre Delforge. La plante est abondante dans le district de Konavle où elle pousse par milliers en compagnie d'O. montenegrina. (Si nécéssaire, le district de Konavle est la partie la plus méridionale de la Croatie, au sud-est de Dubrovnik.) D'autre part, deux plantes isolées on été repérées dans la presqu'île de Peljesac et l'île de Lastovo. Bien que les orchidologues qui ont récemment parcouru la Dalmatie n'aient que peu parlé d'O. tenthredinifera s.l., il y a déjà des mentions d'O. villosa en 1872 par le botaniste croate Schlosser, et d'O. tenthredinifera en 1986 par Gölz & Reinhard." Il est possible que le sud de la Croatie subisse une colonisation à partir de graines amenées d'Italie par les vents d'ouest. In 2010 extensive orchid prospections were done in the Rif Valley, northern Marocco, mainly in the Talassemtane National Park close to the city of Chefchaouen. For the first time, O. neglecta was discovered in North Africa. Marrocan plants have a morphology very close to that of the European species. The rather small lip, 9-11.5 mm long and the big tuft of hairs above the appendix are typical characteristics of the O. neglecta from Italy, Sardinia and Corsica. The presence of many individuals with green or yellowish green sepals was noteworthy. They have been named O. neglecta var. riphaea F.M. Vazquez and have since been upgraded to species level by Pierre Delforge. De nombreuses prospections orchidologiques ont été réalisées en 2010 dans la Vallée du Rif, Nord du Maroc, en particulier dans le Parc National de Talassemtane près de la ville de Chefchaouen. Pour la première fois on découvrit O. neglecta en Afrique du Nord. Les plantes sont morphologiquement très voisines de l'espèce européenne. Le petit labelle, long de 9 à 11,5 mm et l'importante touffe de poils qui surmonte l'appendice sont des caractères typiques des O. neglecta d'Italie, de Sardaigne et de Corse. La présence de nombreux individus aux sépales verts ou vert jaune était remarquable. Ils ont reçu le nom d'O. neglecta var. riphaea F.M. Vazquez et ont depuis, été élevés au rang spécifique par Pierre Delforge. This species is endemic to the South of Corsica, around Bonifacio. It shares characters of the O. tenthredinifera and the O. neglecta groups. Flowers are large, and quite often very dark. The basal field is reddish and the floor of the stigmatic cavity almost black. Although its pollinator has not yet been identified, it could be Eucera nigrilabis, the pollinator of O. tenthredinifera, and O. aprilia could be a species close to O. neglecta which adapted itself to the pollinator of O. tenthredinifera. Cette espèce semble endémique de la table calcaire de Bonifacio dans le Sud de la Corse (encore qu'elle existe peut-être en Sardaigne). Ses caractères sont intermédiaires entre ceux d'O.tenthredinifera et ceux d'O. neglecta. Ses fleurs sont grandes et souvent fort sombres. Le champ basal est rougeâtre et le plancher de la cavité stigmatique noir. Bien que le pollinisateur n'ait pas encore été identifié, ce pourrait être Eucera nigrilabis, le pollinisateur d'O. tenthredinifera, et nous aurions affaire à une espèce proche d'O. neglecta qui s'est adaptée au pollinisateur d'O. tenthredinifera. This very large flowered species is the sole representative of the group in Sicily. Recently the species has been found growing in Calabria. Its presence was also recently confirmed in Numidia, Algeria, North Africa. In this region two species of the tenthredinifera group grow. An early one, attributed to O. tenthredinifera s. str., and a later one, a stronger plant with large very colourful flowers which has been assigned to the Sicilian O. grandiflora and begins flowering when the early species is already fruting. This is no rare plant, having been spotted in about thirty sites where it flowers from early April to the end of May. You will find more informations about it under the heading OPHRYS NEWS n°12. This name is the more accurate one for oriental plants of the group; they are distributed from Greece to Turkey and Cyprus. The most distinctive character is the wreath of long hairs which circles the lip, and usualy the lack of a tuft of hairs about the appendix. It's sometimes quite tricky to differentiate O. leochroma and O. villosa on slides. But has to be pointed out that the total length of both the gynosteme and the stigmatic cavity is almost equal to the lip length in O. villosa, but just to about half of the lip length in O. leochroma. This species is polytypical, and has now been splitted in four different entities, O. villosa, dictynnae, leochroma and O. ulyssea q.v. Slides 1-2 show typical plants from Crete. Slide 11 shows a plant from a Messinian population with a very dark lip which perhaps belongs to another species. C'est le nom le plus adéquat pour les plantes orientales, réparties de la Grèce continentale à la Turquie et à Chypre. Leur caractère le plus marquant est la couronne de longs poils qui fait le tour du labelle et, en général, l'absence d'une touffe de poils au-dessus de l'appendice. This is the very early flowering species endemic to Crete, where it was, at the beginning only known from few stations but has now been discovered all over the island. The flowering period goes from mid-January to early March. The flowers are large, with a mean length of the lip of 12.04 mm and of the lateral sepals of 12.71 mm. Optically the lip is often very narrow because of its strong convexity; sepals are always very light, yellowish or pinkish; the basal field and the bottom of the stigmatic cavity are light red; staminodial dots are present; pilosity is broad, greenish yellow and keeps its breadth all around the lip; a tuft of yellow hair is above the appendix. C'est l'espèce très précoce, endémique de Crète, où elle n'était connue au départ que de quelques rares stations; mais maintenant elle a été découverte dans toute l'île. La période de floraison s'échelonne de la mi-janvier au début mars. Les fleurs sont grandes, la moyenne de la longueur du labelle étant de 12,04 mm et celle des sépales latéraux de 12,71 mm. Le labelle est optiquement étroit et souvent très convexe; les sépales sont toujours assez pâles, blanchâtres ou rosâtres; le champ basal et le plancher de la cavité stigmatique sont rouge clair; les points staminodiaux sont présents; la pilosité est large, jaune verdâtre et reste de largeur constante tout autour du labelle; une touffe de poils jaunes se trouve au-dessus de l'appendice. It is the latest flowering Cretan species of the O. tenthredinifera group. Its distribution area is quite extensive, extending to the Aegean islands, continental Greece and Turkey. The flowering period begins at mid-March, and goes to early May. The flowers are quite large, with a mean length of the lip of 12.83 mm. It's sometimes quite tricky to differentiate O. leochroma and O. villosa on slides. O. ulyssea is an Ionian species present in all Greek Ionian Islands and also on nearby continent, where it is rare. Its flowers are small, lip length: 9.5 mm, i.e. the length of O. villosa lip, much shorter than that of O. leochroma which on Kefalonia flowers in the same places at the same time, from the end of March to the end of April. Some plants have slightly larger flowers but are structurally not significantly different from those with small flowers, most probably belonging to the same entity. See slide 7 beneath. O. ulyssea est une espèce ionienne, présente dans toutes les Îles Ioniennes et en marge des régions continentales voisines, où il est rare. Ses fleurs sont petites, longueur moyenne du labelle: 9,5 mm, c'est-à-dire celle du labelle d'O. villosa et beaucoup plus petites que celles d'O. leochroma qui fleurit à Céphalonie aux mêmes endroits et à la même époque, de la fin mars à la fin avril. Certaines plantes ont des fleurs légèrement plus grandes, mais leur structure est la même et elles appartiennent probablement à la même entité. Voyez ci-dessous la photo 7. This is a hybridogen species, result of crossings between O. candica and O. tenthredinifera, and probable adaptation to another pollinator which could be Eucera taurica (Anthophoridae). Il s'agit d'une espèce hybridogène, résultat de croisements entre O. candica et O. tenthredinifera. This most wonderful Ophrys is an hybridogene species between O. chestermanii and O. tenthredinifera, which evolved in the mountains close to the city of Iglesias in the south-western corner of Sardinia. Quite often the plants grow in the shadow of trees, where their pollinator, the bumblebee Psithyrus vestalis, which also pollinates O. chestermanii, flies. Ce superbe Ophrys est une espèce hybridogène qui s'est développée entre O. chestermanii et O. tenthredinifera dans les montagnes de l'arrière-pays d'Iglésias, dans le sud-ouest de la Sardaigne. Il a le même pollinisateur qu'O. chestermanii, le bourdon parasite Psithyrus vestalis, qui vole plutôt à l'ombre des arbres, où poussent les Ophrys. This species, endemic to the island of Kythira (Attica, Greece), is very characteristic by the strong tuft of yellowish or reddish brown hairs above the appendix of the lip. Such a tuft is not present among the oriental species of the group with the exception of O. lycomedis, described in the same paper and endemic to another Greek island, Skyros in the Northern Sporades. On the other hand, that tuft of hairs exits among some western species, O. neglecta of course but also O. ficalhoana and O. grandiflora. It's a slender plant, 11-24.5 cm tall with 3-11 flowers. The flowers are very small with a mean lip length of 7.34 mm. The very tranversaly convex lip looks globular to quadangular. There is a very strong yellowish pilosity all around the lip; the basal cavity is dark, as is the base of the basal field which becomes lighter close to the macula. The plant is of common occurence on Kythira and flowers there from mid-March to mid-April. During a stay on the island from April 18 to April 22, 2014, it was only possible to spot just one old flower. Flowering time was completely over. Cette espèce endémique de l'île de Cythère (Attique, Grèce) est très caractéristique par la présence d'une forte touffe de poils jaunes ou brun rouge au-dessus de l'appendice du labelle. Cette touffe de poils est absente chez les représentants orientaux du groupe, à l'exception d'O. lycomedis, décrit dans le même article et endémique d'une autre île grecque, Skyros dans les Sporades du Nord. Par contre, cette touffe de poils est présente chez plusieurs espèces occidentales, O. neglecta bien entendu, mais aussi chez O. ficalhoana et O. grandiflora. La plante est grêle, haute de 11-24,5 cm et porte de 3 à 11 fleurs. Celles-ci sont très petite, la longueur moyenne du labelle n'étant que de 7,34 mm. Le labelle, d'aspect globuleux à quadrangulaire, présente une forte convexité transversale. Il y a une importante pilosité jaunâtre tout autour du labelle; la cavité stigmatique est sombre tout comme la base du champ basal qui devient plus clair près de la macule. La plante est fréquente à Cythère où elle fleurit de la mi-mars à la mi-avril. Toutefois lors d'un séjour dans lîle du 18 au 22 avril 2014, il n'a plus été possible que de trouver une unique vieille fleur. La floraison était tout à fait terminée. This species is endemic to the Greek island of Skyros in Northern Sporades. Like the previous one, O. amphidami (B3-13), it is characteristic by the presence of a long tuft of straight hairs above the appendix of the lip. This tuft is usually absent in the oriental species but exists in the west on species close to O. neglecta. O. lycomedis can be 17.5 cm tall and the scape has up to 5 flowers. These are mid-sized to rather large with a 10.3 - 13.8 mm long lip. Around the lip, the pilosity is broad and thick, of a yellowish to honey colour. As a whole flowers are very colourful. The species was spotted on eight different sites, mostly in the northern half of the island where it flowers mainly in March. Cette espèce est endémique de l'île grecque de Skyros dans les Sporades du Nord. Comme la précédente, O. amphidami (B3-13), elle se caractérise par la présence d'une longue touffe de poils raides au-dessus de l'appendice du labelle. Cette touffe est en général absente ches les espècesz orientales du groupe mais existe chez les espéces occidentales voisines d'O. neglecta. O. lycomedis atteint une hauteur de 17,5 cm et la tige porte jusqu'à 5 fleurs. Celles-ci sont de taille moyenne à assez grande, la longueur du labelle variant de 10,3 à 13,8 mm. Tout autour du labelle la pilosité, large et dense, est jaunâtre ou couleur de miel. Dans l'ensemble les fleurs sont très colorées. L'espèce a été observée dans huit sites surtout répartis dans la partie nord de l'île. Elle y fleurit surtout en mars.
