This group is made up of 12 species spread from Spain to Turkey, one species reaching Libya in North Africa.

This is the plant with very small flowers in Corsica and in Sardinia where it is of rare occurence. Another taxon, O. ortubae was recently described from Sardinia, but it still remains to be seen if it is specificaly different. For long it was beleived to grow also in France, but it now appears that continental plants most probably belong to another species, O. forestieri (Cfr. group A2). And still another species with small flowers, O. peraiolae was found in Corsica. This species is now generaly accepted by specialist and can be seen in group A2. C'est la plante à petites fleurs de Corse et de Sardaigne, rare dans cette dernière île. Une autre espèce vient d'être décrite de Sardaigne, O. ortubae, mais il reste à déterminer si elle est vraiment spécifiquement distincte d'O. funerea. On a longtemps pensé qu'O. funerea poussait aussi en France, mais il semble que les plantes continentales appartiennent à une autre espèce, O. forestieri que vous pouvez voir dans le groupe A2. Une troisième espèce à petites fleurs, O. peraiolae a été décrite de Corse. Elle semble maintenant bien acceptée par tous les spécialistes du genre, et vous la verrez aussi dans le groupe A2. This is the plant with medium sized flowers from Corsica and Sardinia. It has a strong zonation on the lip, at the end of the macula. Slides 1-2 are made in Sardinia, slides 3-8 in Corsica. This is the small flowered "fusca" s. l. from Monte Argentario on the western coast of Italy. The lip is very small, 8-10 mm long, much shorter than that of the other "fusca" s. l. present in the region, O. lucifera, the length of the lip of which is 14-20 mm. O. hespera flowers mostly on the late, after the third week of April and well into May, on the countrary to O. lucifera which flowers much more early in March and early April. The species exists in Toscana and perhaps also in Liguria but its distribution area is poorly known. There is no unanimity about this species, some orchidologist believing it to be a synonym of O. sulcata, others a synonym of O. delforgei. Il s'agit du "fusca" s. l. à petites fleurs du Monte Argentario, sur la côte tyrrhénienne de l'Italie. Son labelle est très petit, d'une longueur de 8-10 mm; beaucoup plus petit que celui de l'autre "fusca" s. l. de cette région, O. lucifera dont le labelle atteint une longueur de 14-20 mm. O. hespera fleurit sur le tard, depuis la dernière semaine d'avril jusqu'en mai alors qu'O. lucifera fleurit en mars et au début d'avril. L'espèce existe en Toscane et peut-être en Ligurie, mais son aire de répartition est mal connue. Il n'y a pas de vrai consensus à propos d'O. hespera, certains orchidologues en faisant un synonyme d'O. sulcata, d'autres d'O. delforgei. This late flowering species was described from Catalonia in the north of Spain. It also exists in the south of France and is illustrated here by plants from the Bouches-du-Rhône. Slides 1-2-3 show a population from the chaîne de l'Estaque and slides 4-5-6 another one from the bois de la Lare, close to the Sainte Baume. Both populations were flowering in the beginning of May 2000, which is perhaps rather early for the species, but it must be remembered that 2000 was a very early year. The mean value of the ratio length/width of the labellum is 1,41 for plants of the first population (n=4) and 1,28 for plants of the second population (n=5). The expected value, given by Pierre Delforge is 1,32. It is in the opinion of the French orchidologists O. Gerbaud, A. Gévaudan, J.-M. Moingeon and L. Berger that these plants, although belonging to quite variable populations, do not belong to O. arnoldii but definitely to O. lupercalis (O. Gerbaud, comm. pers.). Then I added slides 7-8-9-10-11 showing late flowering typical Spanish O. arnoldii to help comparing French and Spanish populations. This clearly differentiated species has now received a name but is still better known by the name of its pollinator, Andrena florentina. Syn.: O. "(florentina-) fusca" Paulus & Gack nom. nud. From the three species of the group growing in continental Greece, this one, with a lip length of 15-20 mm, has the largest flowers. It's also the later flowering one. Tristan Lafranchis (pers. comm.) says that O. leucadica (A3-8) opens the season from mid-March to mid-April, then follows, in April, O. perpusilla (A3-7), and O. calocaerina flowering from the end of April to mid-May. Sicilian populations - Populations siciliennes In JEO 2005, W. Wucherpfennig & H. Presser published a paper about the discovery of this Greek species in Sicily and on the Italian mainland. In this paper, these Ophrys at the time (2000) impossible to name, are carefully compared with the other Sicilian O. fusca s.l., O. caesiella, O. lupercalis, O. obaesa, O. flammeola and O. sabulosa, and with Greek O. calocaerina. The very long petals (8.5-11.5 mm in Sicily, 8.5-10 mm in Greece) are characteristic of this species. Anyway, the lip of Sicilian plants (13-16 mm long) is somewhat shorter than that of Greek plants (15-20 mm long), but in Greece that length can be quite variable from population to population, and it is sad that the standard deviation was not published. The five photos beneath correspond very well with these Sicilian O. calocaerina. Dans JEO 2005, W. Wucherpfennig & H. Presser ont publié la découverte en Sicile et en Italie continentale de cette espèce grecque. Dans l'article, ces plantes à l'époque (2000) indéterminables, sont soigneusement comparées aux autres taxons siciliens du groupe d'O. fusca s.l., O. caesiella, O. lupercalis, O. obaesa, O. flammeola et O. sabulosa, de même qu'aux O. calocaerina grecs. Les pétales très longs (8,5-11,5 mm en Sicile, 8,5-10 mm en Grèce) sont caractéristiques de cette espèce, mais le labelle des plantes siciliennes (13-16 mm de long) est un peu plus court que celui des plantes grecques (15-20 mm de long). Toutefois en Grèce ce caractère varie de population à population, et il est dommage que l'écart-type n'ait jamais été calculé, ou tout au moins publié. This species is still better known by its synonym O. punctulata Renz. P. Devillers and J. Devillers-Terschuren have shown that O. punctulata is a synonym of O. leucadica. See OPHRYS NEWS 4 n°26 for more informations. This plant, with small flowers, was described from northwestern Greece, but seems to exist also in Peloponnese. This species, with medium sized flowers is quite widespread in Greece and the Aegean bassin. It is not at all rare from the Ionian islands in the West to south-western Anatolia. Slides 3 to 8 show plants growing on the island of Hvar, off the Dalmatian coast of Croatia. Hvar appears to be the only place where grows a O. fusca s.l. in the South of Croatia. Although these plants show some differences from those growing on the Greek island of Lefkada, it is more wise, for the time being, not to split them. Among these differences, plants from Hvar hold their lips more horizontal than does O. leucadica. Their lips have the same mean length but are broader, the lip pilosity is more well-ordered and the groove on the lip is less important. Cette espèce, aux fleurs de taille moyenne, est assez abondante en Grèce et dans le bassin Égéen. Elle pousse des îles ioniennes à l'Anatolie occidentale. Les diapositives 3 à 8 montrent des plantes de l'île de Hvar, au large de la côte dalmate, en Croatie. Hvar semble être la seule place dans le Sud de la Croatie où pousse un O. fusca s.l. Bien que ces plantes montrent quelques différences par rapport aux O. leucadica de Leucade, en particulier le port des fleurs plus horizontal, le labelle de même longueur moyenne mais plus large, la pilosité plus ordonnée et le sillon bisecteur moins important, il semble, dans l'état actuel de nos connaissances, qu'il vaille mieux les rattacher à O. leucadica que d'en faire une espèce indépendante. | ||

Until recently, Pseudophrys of the O. fusca s.l. groups were, in Croatia, only spotted on the island of Hvar. But on the island of Vis they have now been discovered. It appears that on that island there are two flowering waves, an early one in March and a later one in April. Most March flowering plants have flowers with a lip showing an irregular pilosity, riminding that of the Corsican O. marmorata and the Aegean O. parosica, both species they of course do not belong to. (Roko Cicmir, pers. comm.) More researches are now needed to see if these plants are true O. leucadica or constitute another taxon. That's the reason of their presentation here, in the hope that they will attract the attention of Pseudophrys specialist(s) who shall (will), in the future, bring forward further investigations. Jusqu'à récemment des Pseudophrys des groupes d'O. fusca s.l. n'étaient connus avec certitude, en Croatie, que de l'île de Hvar. On en a découvert maintenant dans l'île de Vis. Il semble y avoir là deux vagues successives de floraisons, la première en mars, la seconde en avril. La plupart des plantes de mars ont sur le labelle une pilosité mitée rappelant celles d'O. marmorata en Corse et d'O. parosica dans l'Égée, deux espèces auxquelles elle n'appartiennent évidemment pas (Roko Cicmir, comm. pers.). Des recherches complémentaires sont nécéssaires pour savoir s'il s'agit de vrais O. leucadica ou si l'on a affaire à un autre taxon. C'est la raison de leur présentation ici, dans l'espoir qu'elles attirent l'attention d'un ou de spécialiste(s) des Pseudophrys qui s'attellera (-ont) dans l'avenir à la résolution de ce problème. | ||

The authors recently put to the fore the existence of a second small species of Pseudophrys in Sardinia. This species, O. ortuabis, has still smaller flowers, and flowers more early than the other one, O. funerea. M. P. Grasso & L. Manca (2002) have discovered the pollinator of O. ortuabis. It is Andrena hypopolia. You will find more informations about it in the heading NEWS 2 n°14. Cette espèce, O. ortuabis, a des fleurs encore plus petites, et fleurit plus tôt que l'autre plante, O. funerea. M. P. Grasso & L. This lovely little Ophrys with very small flowers, length of the lip 6-9 mm, is said to be endemic to the island of Rhodes, which is not true, as it was discovered in 2005 on the nearby island of Kos by Zissis Antonopoulos. Most probably it also grows on some of the islands which are between Kos and Rhodes. It's of common occurence in the south of the island, but size of populations varies quite a lot from year to year, depending on the weather. It is pollinated by Andrena tomora. Ce joli petit Ophrys aux très petites fleurs, le labelle a une longueur de 6-9 mm, est considéré comme endémique de l'île de Rhodes, ce qui n'est pas exact puisqu'il vient d'être découvert, en 2005, dans l'île voisine de Kos par Zissis Antonopoulos. Il est probable qu'il existe aussi dans les îles qui sont entre Kos et Rhodes. Il est commun dans le sud de l'île mais ses populations varient fortement d'année en année en fonction des conditions climatiques. Il est pollinisé par Andrena tomora.
